SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – A great pitching matchup went in favor of Lamar University as they beat the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team, 3-1 on Saturday in game two of a Southland Conference series at Sullivan Field.
Billy Love went eight innings for Lamar (31-10, 16-4, SLC) and kept UIW off the board for seven of those innings. The only run he allowed came in the eighth inning when UIW loaded the bases with three singles from
Eddy Gonzalez (Laredo/United HS),
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) and
Tanner Wall (San Antonio/Johnson HS) with only one out.
Matt Morris (Tucson, AZ/Saguaro HS) hit an RBI ground out to third base, but Love then got
Weston Pitts (Highland Village/Flower Mound Marcus HS) to fly out to right field to end the threat. Love allowed nine hits, the one earned run, walked one and struck out seven to pick up his fifth win of the season. Fernando Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
On the UIW (11-32, 4-16 SLC) side,
John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) picked up the loss after allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings, walking one and striking out five.
Trevor Hardee (Alvord/Alvord HS),
Austin Preiss (La Vernia/La Vernia HS) and
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) combined to finish the remaining 3.2 innings without allowing a run. Hardee went 2.1 innings allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five of the seven batters he retired.
After allowing 20 runs Friday night, UIW held Lamar to three runs on 12 hits and collected nine hits and committed one error, but could not come up with the clutch hit with runners on base. Gonzalez led the way with three hits and a run scored, while
Trey Rodriguez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) hit a triple, a double and walked once. Wall also collected two hits for UIW.
For Lamar, the top four guys in the lineup combined to go 8-for-14 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bryndan Arredondo also added two hits for the visiting Cardinals.
Game three of the series is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start tomorrow at Sullivan Field.
