SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Southland Conference leader in homeruns, Lamar University, used the long ball to rout the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team, 20-6 in game one of a three game conference win on Friday at Sullivan Field.
Lamar (30-10, 15-4 SLC) hit five homeruns, including two from Reid Russell, who now has a conference-high 15 homeruns on the season. Lamar scored 14 runs in the first three innings and led comfortably after the first inning. UIW (11-31, 4-15 SLC) responded to Lamar's three runs in the first inning with a run of their own and had the bases loaded with one out, but a double play ended the threat.
Russell finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a walk and four RBI's before being pulled after three innings. Robin Adames collected four hits, drove in four and scored twice, and Cutter McDowell finished with three hits, five runs scored and two RBI's. Will Hibbs picked up the win to move to 9-1 on the year, while
Bernie Martinez (Laredo/United HS) took the loss for UIW.
The home Cardinals hit the ball well, 12 hits and six runs, but it was not enough.
Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) collected three hits and drove in a run,
Weston Pitts (Highland Village/Flower Mound Marcus HS) collected two hits, an RBI and a run, and
Trey Rodriguez had two hits and a run scored.
Game two of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
