WACO, TEXAS – Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS) hit a grand slam as part of a five-run eighth inning to tie the game 7-7, but it was not enough as the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped a non-conference game, 8-7 against Baylor on Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark.

The Bears (19-22) won on a walk off single by Steven McLean in the bottom of the ninth to give Baylor only their second win in their last eight games.  They took the lead early in the second inning with two runs, but the Cardinals (11-30) tied it right away with a Trey Rodriguez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) double and an Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) single to make it 2-2.

It would be all Bears for the next few innings as they scored one run in every remaining inning except for the eighth.  Then, down 7-2 in the eighth, Hoffman hit another run-scoring single before Morris tied the game with a grand slam, his first homerun of the season.

The Cardinals used five pitchers in the loss with Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) tagged the loss.  Hoffman collected three hits, drove in two and scored a run.  Weston Pitts (Highland Village/Flower Mound Marcus HS) hit two singles and scored a run, while Morris' four RBI's are a season high for him after missing a big part of the season due to an injury.

For the Bears, McLean and Sheppard each collected four hits apiece. McLean drove in four runs and Sheppard scored two runs in the win. Joe Heineman was the winning pitcher after allowing one run in 2.0 innings and striking out two.

The Cardinals are back home this weekend for a Southland Conference series against Lamar starting Friday at 6:30 p.m.
