SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – With the University of the Incarnate baseball team leading 4-3 in the fourth,
Brance Kahle (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS) hit a three-run homerun that started a run that led to a 14-4 win at Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. The Cardinals took the Southland Conference run-rule victory in eight innings at Jaycees Field after dropping the first two games of the series.
The Lumberjacks (19-21, 8-13 SLC) got on the board first in the opening frame and scored four runs in the first four innings, but that would be it for their offense. The Cardinals (11-29, 4-14 SLC) answered with three runs in the second thanks to a two-run single by
Trey Rodriguez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) and then an RBI single from
Eddy Gonzalez (Laredo/United HS).
After SFA tied it 3-3 with two runs in the third, UIW regained the lead after
Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) hit a sacrifice fly to score
Weston Pitts (Highland Village/Flower Mound Marcus HS) and then Kahle's first homerun of the season gave them a 7-3 lead. They went on to score seven more runs to 10-run rule the Lumberjacks after eight innings. The Cardinals out-hit SFA, 15-8 and allowed no homeruns after allowing four homeruns and being outscored, 18-2 in the two previous games.
Every Cardinal in the lineup collected at least one hit and
Ryan Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) led the way with three hits, two runs, two RBI's and two walks.
Eddy Gonzalez, Kahle,
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS) and Rodriguez all collected two hits apiece. Seven of nine Cardinals also collected an RBI, while Kahle drove in three. Pitts finished 1-for-2 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk. The 14 runs for UIW are the most runs they have scored this season.
Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS),
Tanner Wall (San Antonio/Johnson HS), and
Eddy Gonzalez all hit a double in the win.
Cody Richey (Fair Oaks/Comfort HS) picked up his first win of the season after going five innings while allowing two earned runs (two unearned), walking three and striking out four.
Lance Moszkowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) pitched the last three innings and did not allow a run. He only allowed one hit and no walks while striking out one for his sixth save of the season.
For SFA, Jarred Greene fell to 4-4 after picking up the loss. Zac Michener collected three hits and Garrett McMullen drove in two runs.
The Cardinals next game will come on the road as they travel to Waco to face Baylor on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
