SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team fell into a 6-0 deficit before coming back at UTSA, but they came up a little short in a 6-3 loss on Wednesday at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners (18-27) scored three in the second inning thanks to a two-run homer by Kaley Pyles and then Pyles drove in another run in the third inning. They tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single by Alyssa Cummings.
The Cardinals (14-27) finally got on the board in the sixth inning when
Katie Helm (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) cracked a solo homerun, her first of the year. In the seventh inning, UIW put together three consecutive singles after one out was recorded. A bases loaded walk scored one run and put the tying run on base, but they could only manage one more run in the inning.
Chelsea Parker pitched a strong game for the Roadrunners and retired the first 16 batters before Helm's homerun. She finished off the complete game allowing five hits, three runs and a walk while striking out six. She improved to 6-10 with the win. Pyles was the only UTSA player with two hits as the team tallied nine safeties.
Sarah Leal (Kyle/Hays HS) was tagged with the loss for the Cardinals after allowing six runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Bridget Stein (Brenham/Brenham HS) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief to finish the game.
The Cardinals are back in action this weekend when they host Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin for a three game series starting with a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m.
