ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the first against UT-Arlington in a non-conference road game, but would not score the rest of the way to drop the first game of a three game series, 10-2 on Thursday night at Clay Gould Park.
In the first inning, the Cardinals (5-17) got on the board thanks to an RBI single from Brance Khale (Colleyville/Grapevine Faith HS). Kahle drove in
Austin Hoffman (Goodyear, AZ/Millenium HS) who reached base earlier on a fielder's choice. Kahle advanced to second after a walk to
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS) and
Braden Martin (Andrews/Andrews HS) later drove in Kahle with a single to right center to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks (12-11) responded right away with a run in the bottom of the first on a solo home run from R.J. Williams and later took the lead with two runs in the second. They outhit UIW, 17-8 and hit two home runs, a triple and two doubles. Designated hitter, Christian Hollie, had a terrific night. He finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI's. Brady Cox and Darien McLemore both had three hits apiece en route to a win in game one.
For the Cardinals,
Ryan Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS), Kahle and Martin all had two hits each.
Bernie Martinez (Laredo/United HS) started the game on the mound and took the loss for UIW. They used six pitchers in the evening and
Austin Preiss (La Vernia/La Vernia HS) was the only one to now allow a run. He went 1.1 innings striking out one and only allowing one hit.
The winning pitcher for the Mavericks was Jacob Moreland, who pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in relief. He faced 11 Cardinals and retired all of them in order, including four strikeouts.
Game two of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. UIW will send
John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS) to the mound. Shull is coming off a great performance against McNeese State in which he only allowed one run in six innings of work and struck out five.
