ARLINGTON, TEXAS –
Christian Divelbiss (Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS) hit his second home run of the season, but it was not enough as the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped a non-conference game to UT Arlington, 9-3 on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Cardinals (5-18) found themselves down 2-0 after the first inning, but they bounced back to take the lead with three runs in the second. Divelbiss led off the second with a solo home run and
Braden Martin (Andrews/Andrews HS) followed with a single.
Bryce Shepherd (Colspring/Colspring-Oakhurst HS) hit a double that moved Martin to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by
Hunter Kunc (Mason/Mason HS). Shepherd then came around to score on an
Eddy Gonzalez (Laredo/United HS) single for the third run of the innings.
The Mavericks (13-11) settled down and did not allow UIW to score the remainder of the game. They went on to score another run in the third, two in the sixth and put the game away in the eighth with four runs. Quintin Rohrbaugh, Darien McLemore and Noah Vaughan all drove in two runs apiece to lead the way. The three of them combined to go 6-for-12 with three runs and six RBI's.
Shepherd led the Cardinals with a three-hit night, while
Eddy Gonzalez collected two hits and drove in a run. UIW's starting pitcher,
John Shull (San Antonio/Churchill HS), went 5.0 innings allowing five hits, three runs and two walks while striking out two in a no-decision. Lance Moskowicz (Spring/Klein Collins HS) took the loss in relief. The Mavericks' Jake Wilcox earned the win throwing 6.2 innings of relief. He only allowed one hit, no runs and struck out three Cardinals.
The Cardinals will look to salvage game three of the series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. with
Tyler Lesley on the mound. He is 2-2 and will be making his fourth start of the season.
