SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Visiting Stephen F. Austin locked down the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team on Monday night at the McDermott Center by a score of 84-58.
The Lumberjacks (23-5, 16-0) rode the heady play of 2014-15 Southland Conference Player of the Year Thomas Walkup to the victory. He put together a triple-double with 12 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals. SFA held the Cardinals (15-12, 10-6) to just 34.5 percent shooting from the field.
In the first half, the Cardinals stayed close behind the play of senior point guard
Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS). He scored the first eight points of the game for UIW. The Cardinals pulled to within four points at 23-19 after a pair of free throws by
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) with 5:49 left in the half.
Stephen F. Austin closed the first half on a tear as they outscored the Cardinals 19-6 down the stretch. They scored the final nine points of the half, including a 30-foot three-pointer at the buzzer by Demetrious Floyd to make it 42-25.
The second half never got any closer for the Cardinals as the visitors ran away with the game.
The Cardinals went 19-of-55 from the field, made 6-of-17 from three-point range and were 14-fo-19 at the foul line. Badillo led the team with 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and a 6-for-7 day at the foul line.
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) added 10 points off the bench while
Shawn Johnson (New Orleans, LA/Alief Hastings HS) led the team with eight rebounds. The team had 33 points and committed 16 turnovers.
The 'Jacks shot 52.5 percent from the field, made 8-of-18 from three-point range and were 12-of-18 from the foul line. In addition to Walkup, they had three other players scoring in double figures. Clide Geffrard had 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field off the bench. Ty Charles poured in 17 points while Floyd finished with 13 points. They had 40 rebounds, 19 assists and 11 turnovers as a team. They outscored UIW, 40-22 on points in the paint and 23-6 in points off turnovers.
The Cardinals will look to get back on track at Abilene Christian on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
