CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Three weeks ago, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team lost by one point at home to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but on Saturday they were dealt a 69-55 defeat at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders (8-17, 6-9) held a seven-point lead at the half and then gradually pulled away from the Cardinals (6-19, 3-11) in the second half of the Southland Conference matchup. They never led by fewer than 10 points in the second half.
UIW shot 45.2 percent from the field, but the Islanders shot 53.2 percent. The Cardinals committed 22 turnovers that led to 31 points for the home team.
The Cardinals finished the game making 5-of-8 from three-point range and were 12-of-20 from the foul line.
Yvonne Maosa (Arlington/Mansfield HS) led the team with 12 points while
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) added 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Quincy Baker (Spring/Klein HS) led the squad with seven rebounds. Overall, the team had 25 rebounds with 10 coming on the offensive end.
The Islanders went 8-for-18 from three-point range and were 11-of-15 at the foul line. They shot 65 percent from the field in the second half. Shay Weaver led the way with 16 points and made four three-pointers. Camesha Davis went 5-for-5 from the field, scored 13 points and had four blocks. Gee Lawler added 12 points. They had 27 rebounds and committed 19 turnovers.
The Cardinals are back in Wednesday at 6 p.m. when they host Stephen F. Austin.
