Turnovers Trouble Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team could not overcome 23 turnovers on Wednesday night against Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin in an 82-66 loss at the McDermott Center.

The Cardinals (6-20, 3-12) committed a turnover on seven of their first eight possessions and trailed the Lady 'Jacks (16-10, 10-5) 16-2 after seven minutes of action.  UIW trailed 21-6 after the first quarter and went into halftime down 44-23.

SFA shot 58.1 percent from the field in the first half and forced UIW into 16 turnovers that led to 19 points.  Meanwhile, the Cardinals only forced the Lady 'Jacks into four turnovers that led to two points.

UIW played better in the second half.  They committed two fewer turnovers than the Jacks and the result was that the Cardinals outscored SFA, 43-38 in the half.

The Cardinals shot a season high 56.3 percent from the field, made 3-of-10 from three-point range and were 9-for-11 from the foul line.  They had four players score in double figures led by senior Yvonne Maosa (Arlington/Mansfield HS) tallied 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.  Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS), Brianna Williams (Wylie/Mesquite HS) and Quincy Baker (Houston/Klein HS) each had 10 points.  Melina Merritt (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge HS) added seven points and game high eight assists.  The team had 24 rebounds, 19 assists and 23 turnovers.

The Lady 'Jacks finished the night shooting 56.7 percent from the field, made 9-of-17 from three-point range and were 5-for-6 at the charity stripe.  Taylor Ross led the team with 22 points and seven assists on 10-of-14 shooting from the field.  Brentney Branch poured in 20 points off the bench and knocked down four three-pointers.  Taylor Schippers chipped in with 16 points.  They had 25 rebounds, 21 assists and 13 turnovers as a team.

The Cardinals play their final home game of the season on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Lamar University.
