Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cardinals Turn Aside Sam Houston State, 4-1

Four different goal scorers find the back of the net for UIW

Huntsville, Texas – UIW women's soccer scored twice in each half and took advantage of set pieces to defeat host Sam Houston State, 4-1, before 289 fans at Pritchett Field.

How it happened
The Cardinals struck early as Emani Stewart beat her defender and was one-on-one with the keeper, as she netted her first goal of the season just three minutes into the contest.

UIW nearly doubled its lead in the 14th minute as Ana Campa's shot attempt hit the crossbar.

The Cardinals earned a corner kick – one of nine in the match – in the 23rd minute and they took advantage, as Sam Batley sent in a beautiful ball that Abigail Koenigs one-timed into the back of the net from six yards out.

UIW used the corner kick to its advantage nine minutes into the second half as Shelbi Miller scored off another Batley set piece, this time a header from the six yard box.

Sabrina Martineau gave the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage in the 82nd minute, assisted by Brooke Hanson, as Martineau fired a shot that was initially deflected.

SHSU got on the scoreboard thanks to a corner kick in the 90th minute, as Whitney Woodward headed in Meredith Carlson's set piece.

The four goals scored are the most since blanking Prairie View A&M, 5-0, earlier this season, and the most in Southland Conference action since defeating Northwestern State, 5-0, on November 1, 2013.
