SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of Incarnate Word basketball teams are set to host a doubleheader on Saturday against Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian University. The action starts at 2:00 p.m. with the women's game and it will be followed by the men's game at 4:30 p.m. in the McDermott Convocation Center.
After snapping their 10-game losing streak two games ago in a 70-66 win against Southeastern Louisiana, the UIW women's basketball team (5-11, 2-3) traveled to Lake Charles, LA on Wednesday night to knock off McNeese State in a 68-55 victory.
Brianna Williams (Wylie/Mesquite HS) has been playing terrific basketball during the two-game winning streak. She is averaging 21.5 points over her last two games and she is also averaging a total of 8.5 rebounds during that stretch. For the season, Williams leads the Cardinals in scoring at 13.3 points per game while shooting 37.8 percent from the field.
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) is the other Cardinal who is averaging double digits in scoring with 12.6 points per game while shooting a team high 42.3 percent from the floor.
The front court of
Yvonne Maosa (Arlington/Mansfield HS) and
Quincy Baker (Houston/Klein HS) lead the team in rebounding as Maosa is averaging 6.5 rebounds per game and Baker is averaging 4.1 rebounds per contest. From her guard position,
Melina Merritt (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge HS) will set up the offense and she is currently leading the team with 44 assists. As a team, the Cardinals are averaging 56.2 points per game while shooting 36.9 percent from the floor and 29.5 percent from beyond the three point line.
The UIW men's basketball team (8-7, 3-1) is currently on a three game winning streak after beating Southeastern Louisiana last Saturday. The team is 3-1 in conference play with their only loss coming in the conference opener against Sam Houston State. Coming into Saturday's contest against Abilene Christian,
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) has been leading the UIW offense averaging 19.5 points over the last two games.
Hittle leads the Cardinals in scoring on the season averaging 16 points a game while
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) and
Derail Green (Houston/Klein Forest HS) also are averaging double digits in scoring at 14.9 and 11.5 points per contest, respectively.
Shawn Johnson (New Orleans, LA/Alief Hastings HS) leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 rebounds per game while Hittle is second on the team averaging 6.1 rebounds a game. Directing the UIW offense is
Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS) with 5.4 assists per game. The team is averaging 74.8 points a game while shooting 43.2 percent from the field.
The Abilene Christian women are in first place in the conference with a perfect 6-0 mark and they are 15-2 overall. Alexis Mason leads the team with 16.1 points per game while Sydney Shelstead averages 15.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest. They are outscoring opponents by 16 points per game.
The ACU men are 8-10 overall and 3-2 in the conference after only winning four conference games all of last season. Freshman Jaylen Franklin leads the team with 15.7 points per game and he is shooting 52.2 percent from the field with 2.0 steals per game. Three other players are averaging nine points per game and Jaren Lewis is the top rebounder at 5.7 per contest.
