Hat-Trick Thwarts UIW

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team dominated the majority of play against visiting Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon at Benson Stadium, but a disastrous five-minute spell gave the visitors a 3-2 win.

The first half was tied 0-0 with the Cardinals (2-2-0) controlling play against the Panthers (1-1-1).  UIW fired eight shots before the Panthers attempted their first, but once they did the flood gates opened.

Alicia Cooper entered the game midway through the first have for Prairie View.  In the 38th minute of play she pounced on a loose ball in the box, turned and first a shot into the top right corner.  Three minutes later, Courtney Aleman passed the ball inside the box to Cooper who fired it into the top 90 to make it 2-0.  Cooper finished off her masterpiece in the 42nd minute when she was sent through by Khalisha Bond and then chipped a shot over the goalkeeper for a hat-trick.  Cooper completed the hat-trick in 4:09.

The stunned Cardinals regrouped at halftime and came out aggressively in the second half.  UIW finally got on the board in the 60th minute after drawing a foul in the box.  Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) calmly slotted the penalty kick past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1.  The Cardinals continued to push, but the Panther defense did a good job of blocking a number of shot opportunities.  Finally, Koenigs pulled the Cardinals to within a goal when she scored on a long range strike from outside of the box at 85:41.  It was as close as UIW would get and they were forced to accept the defeat.

"Unfortunately, we let one get away today," said UIW head coach Anne Felts.  "We have to play 90 minutes, not just 20 or 30 minutes at a time.  We lost focus for five minutes and all of a sudden we are down three-nil.  The second half was better.  We had some great chances and their keeper made some big time saves.  We have to take advantage of our chances and stay focused."

The Cardinals fired 25 shots while the Panthers managed seven.  In addition, UIW earned eight corner kicks while the Panthers had zero.  Dominique Dillon earned the win for Prairie View and was credited with two saves.

The Cardinals are back in action when they travel to University of Houston for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
