UIW Pitcher Named Kemper Scholar

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word presents one Kemper Scholar each year and the successful candidate for 2014-15 is freshman Regis Gosda of the UIW baseball team.

The Sugar Land, Texas native will now be given the opportunity to be part of a program that allows students to participate in summer internships at both non-profit and for-profit companies.  The Kemper program also provides some funding for students throughout the school year.

Gosda, a pitcher on the UIW baseball team, attended Strake Jesuit College Prep prior to enrolling at Incarnate Word.  He is a business administration major with a 3.94 grade point average who has made four appearances on the mound for the Cardinals as a true freshman.  He has seven strikeouts in just 4.2 innings of work.

In order to be eligible for the Kemper Scholar award, a candidate must be a first-year student with freshman standing and enrolled full-time at UIW.  The Kemper Foundation is looking for unusually mature students with broad interests and a record of academic achievement, extracurricular activity, community service and leadership ability.  A successful candidate will have a commitment to the liberal arts and will maintain at least a 3.00 grade point average.  The Foundation hopes to foster future leaders who pursue a vigorous, broad undergraduate education while participating in community service, engaging in campus activities and exploring their vocational calling outside the classroom.

Gosda is the first UIW student-athlete to be a Kemper Scholar since former football tight end Caleb Kocian in 2008.  The Kemper Foundation is based out of Chicago, Illinois and that is where Gosda will spend his summers each of the next two years in different internship programs.  Following his junior year, he will be given the opportunity to work at a for-profit in a global location of his choice in the summer.
