BEAUMONT, TEXAS –
Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) and Chase Angelle engaged in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel on Friday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium and it was Lamar University defeating the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team, 1-0.
The game was tied 0-0 heading into the ninth inning. The Cardinals (13-27, 4-15) went down in order 1-2-3. In the bottom half of the inning, Stijn Van Der Meer led off the inning with a walk. The next two Lamar (19-22, 8-11) batters each attempted to sacrifice bunt and each time the Cardinals misfielded the ball and it led to the winning run scoring.
UIW had two solid chances to score during the game. In the top of the first inning,
Matt Morris (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro HS) led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch, but was eventually stranded at third base. In the seventh inning, the team had runners on first and second with one out, but back-to-back fielder's choice plays ended the inning.
Encina pitched his best game of the season for the Cardinals. He tossed a complete game and did not allow a runner past second base until the ninth inning. He allowed five hits and two
walks while striking out a season high 10 batters in 8.0 innings.
Angelle pitched just as well as Encina en route to earning the victory. He tossed a complete game allowing four hits and two walks while striking out three to improve to 5-4 on the season.
The two teams are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m.
