Basketball Doubleheader with Islanders

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word is hosting a basketball doubleheader on Saturday against Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.  The women play at 2 p.m. followed the men's game at approximately 4 p.m.  UIW will be observing "Breast Cancer Awareness Day."

The UIW women are 5-19 on the season with a 2-11 record in the conference.  Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) leads the team with 13.4 points per game and is shooting 40.7 percent from the field.  Yvonne Maosa (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) and Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) each had double-doubles in the team's last game.  Maosa is averaging 9.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while Brooks is at 8.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

The Islander women won the first matchup between the two teams, 63-54 back on January 29. AMCC is 12-13 on the season with an 8-6 record in the conference.  Shay Weaver is the team's top scorer at over 16 points per game.  She has drained 54 three-pointers and is grabbing 5.7 rebounds per game.  Olivia Fouty is the team's top inside presence with 12.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

The UIW men's basketball team is 15-7 this year with a 7-5 conference record.  They lost in their last time out to Stephen F. Austin, but will hope to get back on the winning track against the Islanders.  Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) is the nation's leading scorer with 23.2 points per game to go with 6.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game.  Freshman Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) is averaging 16.2 points per game while Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) is averaging 14.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.  He needs just 16 points to reach 1,000 for his career.

The Islanders (14-11, 9-4) are in third place in the conference.  They have three players averaging in double figures and they defeated the Cardinals the first time the two teams played.  John Jordan leads the team with 15.2 points and 5.2 assists per game.  Rashawn Thomas is the team's top post presence with 14.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.  He has also blocked 34 shots this year.
