Women's Tennis Dropped by Texas State and South Alabama

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – At the Bobcat Tennis Complex, the University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team was handed two defeats against Texas State and the University of South Alabama. They lost 5-2 against the Bobcats and 7-0 to the Jaguars on Saturday.

Against the Bobcats (1-2), the Cardinals (1-7) got off the mark by winning the first point of the day in the doubles competition. Rachel Sadiq and Sarah Savedra defeated Ana Laura Gutierrez and Pippa Carr 8-6 in the #1 match, while Maria Batchinsky and Malisa Vatandilok won by default against Eva Dench and Katy Collins.

In singles play, the Cardinals dropped all but one match, which was won by default due to a Bobcat player being sidelined by an illness. The early 2-0 lead for the Cardinals was short-lived as the Bobcats came back to win the remaining five matches.

The closest contest came at the number #1 seed, where Sadiq took a tough loss against Monica Pieratt. After winning the first set 6-3, Sadiq dropped the second 3-6 and the match went to a tie break. At the final hurdle, she fell 13-11 to Pieratt, despite holding an 11-10 lead.

Against the Jaguars (4-0), the Cardinals were unable to get any points. They dropped each of the doubles matches and continued lose each of the singles in straight sets.

The Cardinals are back in action next weekend when they host Midwestern State University at the Mabry Tennis Center on Saturday at 3 p.m.
