SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team eclipsed 100 points for the first time this year in a 108-71 victory on Thursday night at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals (3-2) had seven players score in double figures and they scored 52 points off the bench. Senior point guard
Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS) and sophomore forward
Shawn Johnson (New Orleans, LA/Alief Hastings HS) each posted double-doubles off the bench.
UIW jumped out to a quick 15-4 lead, but a 9-0 run by the Crusaders (1-11) made it a one-point game with 11:54 remaining in the half after a three-pointer by Logan Brown. The Cardinals regained control of the game and went ahead 32-20 after a pair of free throws by
Tyler Singleton (Dallas/Triple A Academy). Another 8-0 run by the Crusaders was capped by Brown's second three-pointer to make it 32-28 with 5:36 left in the half.
The Cardinals reeled off a 22-4 run to take control of the game. They went into halftime with a 54-35 lead despite making only 2-of-12 three-point attempts.
The Cardinals continued to extend their lead in the second half. They shot 57.5 percent from the field and were 6-of-13 from three-point range in the second period.
UIW shot 52.6 percent from the field, made 8-of-25 from three-point range and were 18-of-23 from the foul line. Badillo finished with 17 points, 12 assists and six steals while Johnson had 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) and
Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) each scored 17 points. Walker added five assists while Burmeister grabbed six rebounds.
Derail Green (Houston/Klein Forest HS) had 11 points and eight rebounds,
Kyle Hittle added 11 points and six rebounds while Singleton finished with 11 points and three assists.
The Cardinals had 25 assists and 13 steals while committing 16 turnovers. They had 15 more rebounds than the Crusaders.
Dallas Christian shot 37.5 percent from the field, made 7-of-28 from three-point range and was 4-of-12 from the foul line. Trey Lindsey led the team with 14 points and six rebounds. Brown chipped in with 11 points while Derek Hearn and Anthony McQuary each had 10 points apiece. Hearn led the team with five steals.
The Cardinals travel out of state for their next game on Monday at Sacramento State with tip-off set for 9:05 p.m. CST.
