HAMMOND, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word football travels to Southland Conference rival Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday for a 6:07 p.m. kickoff at Strawberry Stadium.
The Cardinals (4-4, 3-3) are seeking their first road victory of the season and they are currently in a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference. The team is averaging 20 points and 355 yards of offense per game. They are allowing 33 points and 401 yards per game.
The UIW offense is led by sophomore quarterback
Trent Brittain (Eastland/Eastland HS) who leads the conference in passing yards. He is completing 51.6 percent of his pass for 1,683 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He is second on the team 282 rushing yards and four scores. He needs just 211 yards passing and 321 yards of total offense to break his own single season records.
The Cardinals running game is led by
Junior Sessions (Mesquite/Mesquite HS) who has 360 yards on 4.9 yards per carry. Expect to see
Sean Flannel (Brazoria/West Columbia HS) get some more carries with injuries affecting the two-deep roster. He has 18 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown in the last two games.
Kody Edwards (Mesquite/Poteet HS) is the top receiver on the team with 27 catches for 402 yards and two touchdowns and he is averaging 25.6 yards per kick return.
Cole Wick (Hallettsville/Sacred Heart Catholic HS) and
Jordan Hicks (Arlington/Seguin HS) each have 26 catches for over 300 yards.
The UIW defense is led by a strong linebacking crew.
Myke Tavarres (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Ridge HS) was named to a pair of national award watch lists this past week and he enters the game with 87 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks and he will shortly own school single season records in all three stats.
Padyn Giebler (Ivan/Stephenville HS) and
Josh Zellars (Baytown/Lee HS) are a pair of excellent inside linebackers who have combined for 120 tackles and 6.0 tackles for loss.
Robert Johnson (Richmond, CA/Berkeley HS) leads the defensive secondary with 42 tackles and three interceptions while
Kobie Douglas (Plano/Plano HS) has 35 tackles and 10 pass breakups, tops in the conference.
The Lions (4-4, 3-3) are also tied with the Cardinals in the conference standings. They are scoring 22.2 points per game and allowing 22.0 points per game this year. The offense relies heavily on the ground game with Kody Sutton, Julius Maracalin and Xavier Roberson all averaging over 50 yards per game. D'Shaie Landor has played the most at quarterback for the team going 57-of-120 for 886 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Jeff Smiley is the top receiver with 16 catches for 213 yards.
The SLU defense creates a lot of pressure on opposing quarterbacks with 19 sacks on the season. Jordan Batiste leads the team with 51 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. Harlan Miller is one of the top defensive backs in the country and he has 34 tackles, eight pass breakups and three interceptions.
