HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word football team will close out the 2015 season on the road at Southland Conference rival Houston Baptist University on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
The Cardinals (5-5, 4-4) need a win to secure their first winning season within the Southland Conference and only the second winning season in the program's history. The team is averaging just under 20 points and a little over 350 yards per game. They have allowed 29.1 points and 377 yards per game on defense although the opposition has scored five defensive touchdowns this year.
The UIW offense is led by record-setting sophomore quarterback
Trent Brittain (Eastland/Eastland HS). He leads the conference with 2,174 passing yards while completing 51.2 percent of his passes. He is also the team's second leading rusher and leads the Southland Conference with 2,537 yards of total offense this year.
Junior Sessions (Mesquite/Mesquite HS) leads the Cardinals rushing attack with 399 yards and three touchdowns on 4.7 yards per carry. Brittain has 363 yards and a team high six touchdowns on the ground. Sophomore
Kody Edwards (Mesquite/Poteet HS) is the team's top receiver with 34 catches for 545 yards and two scores. He also leads the conference with 25.0 yards per kick return.
Jordan Hicks (Arlington/Seguin HS),
Cole Wick (Hallettsville/Sacred Heart Catholic HS) and
Clint Killough (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) all have at least 25 catches and 300 yards receiving.
The UIW defense relies on their strong linebacking crew. Senior outside linebacker
Myke Tavarres (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Ridge HS) leads the team with 106 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, seven quarterback hurries and five pass breakups. Junior inside linebacker
Josh Zellars (Baytown/Lee HS) has made 80 stops with 4.0 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. Senior inside linebacker
Padyn Giebler (Ivan/Stephenville HS) has 69 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and an interception.
Kobie Douglas (Plano/Plano HS) leads the team with 12 pass breakups while
Troy Lara (San Antonio/Madison HS) has four interceptions.
The Huskies (2-8, 0-7) enter the contest averaging 17.1 points and 300 yards per game while allowing 40 points and 476 yards per game. Max Staver and Tony Dawson are the team's two quarterbacks. Staver is 75-of-168 for 988 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions while Dawson is 34-of-68 for 360 yards, one touchdown and seven interceptions.
Terrance Peters is the top running back on the Huskies with 576 yards on 6.0 yards per carry. B.J. Kelly has 214 yards and a team high five touchdowns in only six games. D'Angelo Wallace leads all receivers with 23 catches for 299 yards, but three other receivers have at least 15 catches and 225 yards.
On defense, Garrett Dolan is the leader of HBU. He has 92 tackles and 5.0 tackles for loss. Cody Moncure has made 77 tackles with 6.0 tackles for loss. Josh Jones leads the team with 3.0 sacks on the season.
