BEAUMONT, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team broke their four game scoreless streak on the road against Lamar University on Sunday in a 1-1 tie. It was the third time the two Southland Conference foes have meet since UIW joined NCAA Division I and it was the third tie between the two Cardinal teams.
In this contest, the UIW Cardinals (3-11-2, 1-5-2) received plenty of help from their freshman goalkeeper,
Sydney Huntsinger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS). She stopped what is believed to be a school record 18 shots in the match, including four in the second overtime period.
Incarnate Word was outshot 8-4 in the first twenty minutes, but that was after freshman
Sabrina Martineau (McKinney/ McKinney North HS) scored her second goal of the season in the eighth minute. She stole the ball from the Lamar defense and fired it to the upper right corner. Lamar (6-10-1, 2-5-1) showed even more pressure after they went down on the scoreboard.
LU kept pushing forward and attacking UIW and earned a reward in the 80
th minute. Lamar's leading scorer, Jordan Mulnix, tied up the game with her 12
th goal of the season when she received a pass in front of the UIW net and finished it past Huntsinger. Mari Olastuen and Juliana Ocampo were each credited with an assist on the play.
Both teams continued to play hard into both the ten minute over times, but neither could end the standoff. Martineau and
Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) each had five shots with two on goal. Huntsinger faced 35 shots from the LU Cardinals and made 18 saves. Lauren Lovejoy was credited with eight saves for Lamar.
The UIW Cardinals will be returning home to host their last two Southland Conference and home games of the season next week. The first will be against Abilene Christian on Friday at 7 p.m. The match on Sunday will be played against Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m.
