SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team picked up their first win of the season on Friday afternoon against visiting South Dakota State, 5-2 at Mabry Tennis Center.
The Jackrabbits (0-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. The Cardinals team of
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and
Joey Vatanadilok (San Antonio/Bridgeway Academy) won at #2 doubles, 6-3. SDSU won at #1 and #3 doubles by identical 6-3 scores.
The Cardinals quickly turned things around during singles action by winning the first five matches.
Leonard Ivic (Podstrana, Croatia/Economic Administration),
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina/Srednja Skola) each swept their matches at #1 and #2 singles. Vatanadilok was the only player on the team to sweep both of his matches when he won 6-0, 6-3 at #4 singles. UIW clinched the match when
Ryan Hoverson (Grand Forks, ND/Red River HS) knocked off Gary Notkin 7-6, 6-3 at #6 singles.
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday at 11 a.m. against Monterey Tech in Edinburg, TX.
