WACO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team was defeated by Baylor University on Friday night, 5-0 at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.
The Bears (4-1) jumped on the Cardinals (0-5) from the start scoring four times in the first 22 minutes. Baylor fired off 28 shots in the contest before the Cardinals attempted their first of the match. After the initial scoring spurt, UIW was able to keep the Bears off the scoreboard until the 83
rd minute.
Baylor opened the scoring at 1:25 when Alexa Wilde headed home a corner kick from Justine Hovden. Less than 12 minutes later, Hovden picked up her second assist of the game when she fed Precious Akanyirige for a goal at 12:42. Hovden added a third assist at 17:03 when she fed a corner kick into the box that Bri Campos was able to slot home. Campos notched a second goal at 21:08 when she rebounded her own miss and hammered it into the top right corner.
The Bears scored their final goal of the match at 82:03 when Lauren O'Connell put one past the UIW goalkeeper.
The Bears finished the game with 30 shots and held the Cardinals to one shot. UIW played two goalkeepers during the match.
Karly Brightwell (Houston/Waltrip HS) was credited with seven saves in the first half while
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) made six saves while allowing just one goal in the second half. Michelle Kloss started the game in goal for Baylor, but was subbed out for Sara Martinson in the 25
th minute.
The Cardinals are not back in action until September 14 at home against UT-Pan American at 1 p.m.
