SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team hosted their first game of the season on Sunday at Benson Stadium and lost, 2-1 to UT-Pan American.
The Cardinals (0-6-0) started off the match very offensively strong. By the 40
th minute, the Cardinals had taken ten shots with six being on goal. The Broncs (5-1-2) were limited to only three. However, those three were enough to put UT- Pan American up by one to finish the first half.
Aimie Inthoulay caught a high bounce outside of the 18 yard box from Marcela Ramirez and headed the ball past
Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) with 30 seconds left in the half. The starting UIW keeper had only one save in the game.
In the second half, the Broncs started with the momentum and controlled the pace of the game for 10 minutes. The Cardinals came back into action when sophomore
Alexis Santos (Mesquite/North Mesquite HS) scored a beautiful volley past Aubri Coley in the 63
rd minute. The assist went to senior
Sarah Johnson (Austin/Home School).
Even though UIW started to get control of the game, UTPA stole the match in the 72
nd minute with a goal by Andrea Barrera. Frida Farstad-Eriksson served up a superb free kick from near midfield that bounced over a UIW defender to Barrera who was able to slot it home for the winning goal.
The Cardinals finished the game with a total 19 shots, 12 being on goal. The Broncs only took seven with five on goal. The best chance for UIW to tie the game came in the 79
th minute when
Elizabeth Washington (Frisco/Centennial HS) had a 1-on-1 opportunity against Coley who made a strong diving stop.
UIW will hit the road again to play Prairie View A&M University on Tuesday at 5:30 P.M.
