SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team continues their season this weekend, at the University Plaza/Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Tournament hosted by Missouri State, with a pair of doubleheaders, Friday and Saturday.
After losing the first two matches of the season at the College Park Maverick Classic last weekend, the Cardinals (1-2) salvaged the last match of the tournament, beating the Jackson State Tigers in straight sets.
The Cardinals will try to take that momentum into Friday, when they face Western Kentucky at 10 a.m. and then the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 5 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader consists of Missouri State at 12:30 p.m. and Oral Roberts at 5 p.m.
The Cardinals are hitting .120 for the season while averaging 11.0 kills and 1.4 blocks per set. Leading the way for the Cardinals is
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) who was named to the College Park Maverick Classic All-Tournament Team. She has a team-high 26 kills and 37 digs.
Kaitlyn Brooks (Sugar Land/Fort Bend Austin HS) and
Taylor McClelland (Cypress/Cypress Ranch HS) have contributed with 54 and 44 assists, respectively.
The Cardinals have two away tournaments remaining before their home opener, September 27 at 2 p.m. against the University of Central Arkansas.
