Aggies Hold Off Cardinals, 2-1

LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team remained winless on the road this year after a 2-1 defeat at New Mexico State on Sunday afternoon.

In their closet match of the season, the Cardinals (0-4) fell behind 2-0 after 49 minutes before mounting a comeback.  New Mexico State senior forward Jennae Cambra found the net twice on two assists from Layla Todd.  The first came at the 21:39 mark and the second came at 48:34.

The Cardinals did not give up and they were able to cut the deficit in half when sophomore Alexis Santos found herself perfectly positioned to finish a rebound that bounced to her feet.  She tallied the goal at 64:08 giving the team their first goal of the season.  UIW managed four more shot attempts over the final 25 minutes, but could not beat Aggies (1-4) goalkeeper Tayler Hammack again.

"We are getting better and better every game," said UIW head coach Anne Felts.  "Our underclassmen are really stepping into their roles and making an impact.  We played a very good second half today.  It was reassuring for the team to see what they are really capable of and know that the results will come."

The Cardinals attempted 10 shots in the contest while the Aggies had 22 chances.  The Aggies earned four corner kicks, all in the first half, while the Cardinals had just one.  Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) was tagged with the loss for UIW despite making three saves in the first half.  Haley Nelson () played the final 45 minutes in goal and made two saves.  Hammack picked up the win for NMSU by making three saves in the full 90 minutes.

The Cardinals will face Big 12 rival Baylor on Friday at Betty Lou Mays Field at 7 p.m.
