Baseball Travels to Pan American

EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team travels to UT-Pan American on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

The Cardinals (9-20) are fresh off their first ever NCAA Division I series win this weekend when they took 2-of-3 from visiting New Orleans.  The team is hitting .242 for the season with Slade Brown (Keller/Keller HS), Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) and Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) serving as the top offensive threats.  Brown is hitting .316 with six doubles and 19 runs batted in.  Whitehead has hit lead off in every game this year and has a .302 average with 23 runs and eight stolen bases.  Hoover hit .600 last week to bring his average back up to .297 with six doubles and 17 RBI's.

Freshman Cody Richey (Comfort/Comfort HS) is scheduled for the start on the mound for the Cardinals.  He is 0-2 with an 8.49 earned run average in 11.2 innings.  He pitched a scoreless inning of relief on Saturday and went 6.0 solid innings last Tuesday at Baylor.  Overall, the team has a 5.45 earned run average.

The Broncs (13-21) are 11-7 at home and are coming off a 2-1 weekend against Grand Canyon.  They are hitting .239 with Alex Howe leading the offense with a .348 batting average, 10 doubles, three home runs and 26 RBI's.  The pitching staff has a 4.37 ERA and boasts a true No. 1 starter in Sam Street who is 7-0 with a 1.70 ERA.  Street will not be starting against the Cardinals who will instead face Clayton Haltom.  Haltom is 0-1 with two saves in just 5.2 innings of work.  They are a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
