SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 match to Southland Conference rival Lamar University on Saturday and then their match with Sam Houston State on Sunday was rained out.
UIW remained winless in Southland Conference action and now stand at 4-15 overall with a 0-8 SLC record.  Lamar improved to 5-10 on the season with a 2-4 SLC mark.
Lamar jumped out to the early lead in the match by winning 2-of-3 doubles matches.  Carolina Maso and Alicia Porte won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and then Katya Lapayeva and Anna Spengler won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.  UIW won the No. 2 doubles match 8-6 behind the strong play of 
Jennifer Betancourt (Valencia, Valenzuela/La Salle Guaparo) and 
Sarah Savedra (El Paso/El Paso HS).
In singles play, Lamar quickly put the match away by winning four singles matches in straight sets.  UIW picked up their only points of the match behind three-set wins by 
Ivana Katavic (Split, Croatia) at No. 2 and Betancourt at No. 3.  Katavic won 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 and Betancourt won 6-3, 1-6, 10-8.
The Cardinals match with Sam Houston State was rained out and has yet to be rescheduled.  UIW is back in action on Saturday at SLC rival Oral Roberts at 10 a.m.
