SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team picked up an exciting 4-3 win over visiting Laredo Community College on Thursday at the Mabry Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (12-4) led 3-2 with two singles matches remaining, but both were headed to a third set. At No. 1 singles, UIW's Jair Assuncao (Londrina, Brazil/Carmina Grabner) was matched with Arturo Pinazo. Pinazo won the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6, but Assuncao responded with a 6-1 win in the second set. In the third set, Pinazo broke Assuncao's serve to take a 5-3 lead, but Assuncao battled back to force another tie-breaker. Pinazo prevailed, 8-6 in the tie-break to tie the team score at 3-3.
At No. 6 singles, UIW's Brody Rodriguez (Austin/Cedar Park HS) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first set, but Eman Esfandi stormed back to take the set 6-4. Rodriguez regrouped in the second set with a 6-1 win and then led 5-0 in the third set and he had the serve. Esfandi broke Rodriguez's serve, but this time there would be no comeback and Rodriguez clinched the win for the Cardinals when he broke Esfandi in the next game to win 6-1.
The Cardinals were able to grab a crucial point in doubles when Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and Assuncao won at No. 2 while Brandon Davis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and Antonio Cavazos (El Paso/Cathedral HS) grabbed an 8-3 win at No. 3.
