CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Three Cardinals reached the final round of their open singles flights, with Geraldo Delgado earning a title as the University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team opened the fall portion of its season at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open over the weekend.

Playing in the yellow division, Delgado closed out play in dominant Sunday with a 6-1, 6-2 victory Fabian Anthin of Lamar in the championships round.

This came after he opened play by gutting out a three-set, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 win over Alejandro Verdasco of Abilene Christian, then advanced in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) against Dan Hosono of Texas A&M Corpus Christi Saturday.

Alex Flores and Rafael Candelas both reached the final of their respective flights as well.

In the green flight, Flores beat Maxwell Lindstedt of Lamar (6-4, 6-3) and Camile Chantron of UTRGV (2-6, 7-6, 10-8) before losing 6-1, 6-4 to Gabriel Jalouneix of UTSA in the final.

In the purple flight, Candelas endured three, three-set matches, defeating Dai Lopez of TAMU-CC (7-5, 1-6, 10-4) and Stefano Chappuis of Lamar (6-4, 4-6, 11-9), before dropping a great final round match to Gus Tettamble of Abilene Christian (7-5, 3-6, 10-6).
