Nicholls Takes Series from UIW

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team was shutout for a second consecutive game against visiting Southland Conference rival Nicholls State.  The Colonels won the rubber game of the series, 6-0 at Sullivan Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels (21-10, 12-6) received a strong performance from starting pitcher Grant Borne.  He went 7.0 innings scattering four hits and four walks without giving up a run.  He also struck out four batters to run his season record to 5-2.

The Colonels got on the board in the third inning when a potential double play to end the inning turned into a three-base error.  Justin Holt walked with one out and then Nicholls called a hit-and-run and Philip Lyons lofted a fly ball to right field that appeared to be a an inning ending double play with Holt nearly at second base, but the ball got past the fielder and rolled to the wall.  Holt scored on the play and Lyons scored on an infield grounder on the next play.

The visitors scored two more times in the fifth inning and then added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings.  The Cardinals (12-24, 5-7) put runners in scoring position in six different innings, but were unable to score any of them.  UIW finished with six hits as Mark Whitehead and Brandon Clark each hit doubles.

Jacob Potts fell to 2-3 on the season for the Cardinals.  He allowed five hits, two earned runs and two walks in 4.0 innings while striking out three.  Matthew Decker pitched well in relief tossing 2.2 shutout innings allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three.

The Colonels had eight hits in the game with four coming from Lyons.  He and Holt both scored twice in the game.

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday night at home against Prairie View A&M at 6 p.m.
