Women's Tennis Notches First SLC Victory

TULSA, OKLAHOMA – The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team picked up a historic first ever Southland Conference victory on Saturday morning at Oral Roberts University, 4-3.

The Cardinals (5-16, 1-9) fell behind in the doubles matches as the Golden Eagles took 2-of-3 to earn the lone point available.  The duo of Taryn Strahl (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and Kelsey Reblin (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) won 8-4 at No. 3 for UIW, but it was not enough.

The Cardinals and Golden Eagles split the first four singles matches.  Ivana Katavic (Split, Croatia/Ekonomsko-Birotehnicka) and Jennifer Betancourt (Valencia, Venezuela/La Salle Guaparo) won at No. 1 and 3, respectively.  Katavic posted a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win while Betancourt won in similar fashion 7-5, 7-6 (4).  Bouwer and Puentes each won in straight sets for ORU at No. 2 and 4 to maintain a 3-2 lead in the team score.

Despite trailing by a point, the Cardinals were in good hands with Strahl and Reblin playing at No. 5 and No. 6.  Strahl won 6-1, 6-3 while Reblin capped off the comeback with a 6-1, 6-1 win.

The Cardinals remain on the road this weekend and travel to SLC rival Central Arkansas for a 10 a.m. start.
