BEAUMONT - The University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team won their opening Southland Conference (SLC) match over Lamar in a hard-fought 4-3 win Sunday.
The Cardinals started strong in doubles, winning the point with solid performances at lines 1 and 2, setting the tone for the battle ahead.
In singles, every match was a fight, with both teams pushing each other to the limit. Lyric Bonilla and Amelie Montalvo delivered dominant performances, winning their matches in straight sets to give UIW an early advantage. However, Lamar responded, leveling the match at 3-3, putting all eyes on the deciding court.
With the match on the line, Smilia Matovic rose to the occasion, pulling off an incredible third-set victory to seal the win for the Cardinals. Her clutch performance capped off an intense battle.
NEXT UP - UIW has increased confidence heading into two more SLC matches next week against Nicholls and McNeese on March 8th and 10th.
