Baseball Drops Series Finale

Box Score ABILENE, TEXAS – A second straight low-scoring affair went to the home team in a matchup between the University of the Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian University baseball teams at Crutcher Scott Field.  The Wildcats won the game, 4-1 on Sunday in Southland Conference action.

The Cardinals (7-17, 1-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.  Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) led off the game with a single and stole second base.  He came around to score on an error by the Wildcats (12-13, 2-1).  UIW put runners in scoring position in the second, sixth and seventh innings, but could not score.

Abilene Christian tied the game in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Grudzielanek.  In the third inning, ACU scored three times by taking advantage of four walks.  Starting pitcher Mack Morgan made the runs stand up.  He allowed four hits, four walks and an unearned run while striking out three in 6.0 innings to earn the win.  Brady Rodriguez picked up his first save with 3.0 shutout innings of relief.

Jacob Potts (Glendale, AZ/Browne HS) was handed the loss for UIW after giving up four runs in 2.2 innings.  Alex Shaffer (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale HS) made his third relief appearance of the series and continued to hold the Wildcats scoreless.  Kris Looper (Wharton/Wharton HS) closed out the game with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief while allowing just two hits.

The Cardinals now head to Baylor for a two-game series starting on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.
