Box Score SPRING BRANCH, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped a 9-0 decision to St. Edward's University on Tuesday night at Smithson Valley High School's softball field.
The Cardinals (10-12) and Hilltoppers (18-10) were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Cardinals Field, but heavy rains on Monday made parts of the field unplayable. The switch to Smithson Valley came late in the day, but the teams were able to get a game in. On Wednesday, they will play a doubleheader at St. Edward's starting at 1 p.m.
Tuesday's game was all Hilltoppers as they scored twice in the third, five times in the fourth and two times in the fifth inning to win by run-rule. They opened the fourth inning with back-to-back triples by Kendall Lucas and Faith Roberts and included doubles by Breah Whitten and Emily Mayfield. In the fifth inning, Caitie Carney smashed a two-run homer to provide the final margin of victory.
The Cardinals were limited to three hits in the game and
Kristin Hebert was tagged with the loss in the pitching circle.
The Hilltoppers had seven hits, but no one had more than one. Whitten drove in a game high three runs. Sarah Debrow pitched a complete game shutout allowing three hits and no walks while striking out six.
