Cardinals Drop Second Game at Irish Classic

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped their second game at the Irish Baseball Classic at Nelson Wolff Stadium in as many days on Friday with a 16-3 loss to Santa Clara.

The Cardinals (1-4) had their chances to score in the early innings, but left 10 runners on base through the first six innings.  They loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning with one out, but could not bring in a run. The team left two runners on base in each of the second, fifth and sixth innings.

The Broncos (3-4) put runners on base in all but one inning and scored in five different innings.  They led just 4-1 heading into the eighth inning, but then exploded for seven runs to put the game out of reach.  Three bases loaded walks scored three runs and then a triple by Quinton Perry to drive in three runs.  They tacked on five more runs in the ninth inning.

The Cardinals rallied in the eighth inning when they were able to take advantage of a couple of defensive miscues by the Broncos.  They picked up a single when a fly ball fell between two outfielders who miscommunicated who would catch the ball and scored on an error on an infield grounder.  Chris Heckert came on for the Broncos and struck out a pair of batters with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Cardinals finished the game with eight hits as Mark Whitehead and Jesse Hoover each had a pair of singles.  Geno Encina took the loss on the mound after allowing 10 hits, three earned runs and a walk while striking out two in 5.2 innings.

The Broncos had 19 hits in the game led by Greg Harises who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored.  Zach Looney, Stevie Berman, Perry, Peter Summerville and C.J. Jacobe each had two hits apiece.  Peter Hendron picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season.  He allowed seven hits, one run and three walks in 6.0 innings and he struck out five.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Notre Dame at Wolff Stadium.
