Cardinals Edged Out by Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word was edged out 3-1 on the road to Texas State University tonight in non-conference action. The Cardinals are 18-20 on the season, while the Bobcats improved to 26-15.

Texas State grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first on a leadoff home run to go up 1-0.

After going scoreless for the first three innings, UIW tied the game in the top of the fourth. It started when Colin Cymbalista reached first on a throwing error by the Bobcats' shortstop. He then advanced to third when Cole Tabor doubled to the gap in right-center.  Cymbalista later scored on a passed ball to tie the game at one. Tabor was able to move to third on the play. Jake Weaver flied out to center for the first out of the inning. Tabor attempted to tag on the play and score, but was thrown out at home for the second out. The inning came to a close on a groundout.

Both teams went scoreless for the next two and a half innings, and in the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats broke the tie on a two-run home run to go up 3-1 before back-to-back outs ended the inning.
Down to their final six outs, the Cardinals were held hitless as the Bobcats allowed just a walk while striking out four to hold on to win.

The Cardinals out-hit the Bobcats five to four for the game.

Cardinal starting pitcher Matthew Foley scattered two hits over two innings, allowing one run, while striking out a game-high three.

Reliever Ashton Perkins took the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season. He allowed two runs on two hits in an inning of work.

Drake Anderson led all Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-3, while Preston Newberry, Tabor, and Weaver each tallied a hit. Tabor recorded the team's only extra-base hit in the form of a double.
