SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped the first game of the series in a 14-3 run-rule loss to visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B, this afternoon. The Cardinals fall to 18-21 and 8-14 in the conference, while the Islanders are now 19-22 and 8-14.
The Islanders plated three runs on three hits to take an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first and added a run in the fourth and six in the fifth to push the lead to 10-0.
UIW was held scoreless for the first six innings and was looking to avoid being run-ruled in the seventh.
Tyler Garritano walked to open the inning, and he later advanced to third when
Kevin Ramos doubled to right-center. Following a pitching change, the Islanders got two fast back-to-back outs. Down to its final out of the inning,
Cole Tabor singled to score Garritano, but an error by the second baseman allowed Ramos to score, making it 10-2 before the frame ended.
Headed to the top of the eighth, the Islanders took a 14-2 lead off a three-run home run and an RBI single.
Going to the bottom of the eighth,
Christian Enriquez led off the inning with a home run to right field, making it 14-3. With one down after the home run,
Jake Weaver singled to the gap in right center, but a double play ball ended the inning and game.
Cardinal starter
Zac Colletti suffered the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season. He allowed four runs on eight hits over three and two-thirds innings of work, while fanning four.
Enriquez led UIW at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored.
Tabor closed out the day with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, while recording an RBI.
Drake Anderson, Weaver, and Romas each tallied a hit. Romas' hit was the team's only double.
UIW is back home tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the second game of the series against Texas A&M-CC.
