SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word falls 6-4 late in the ninth to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals drop to 18-22 and 8-15 in the Southland, while the Islanders move to 20-22 and 9-14.
Following a scoreless first two innings for both teams, the Islanders took the lead in the top of the third when they pushed a run across to go up 1-0.
UIW, in its half of the third, responded, and it started with a one-out single by
Drake Anderson. The Islanders were able to get a flyout to left for the second out, but
Preston Newberry connected for a two-run home run to right field to put the Cardinals in front 2-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Islanders knotted the game at two on a pair of hits and an RBI groundout before the inning ended on a catch at the wall by UIW's leftfielder
Jake Weaver.
The Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth retook the lead, and it started when Newberry was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on
Colin Cymbalista's sacrifice bunt. Newberry later came around to score to make it 3-2 when
Cole Tabor singled through the left side before the inning ended.
The Islanders, for the second time today, tied the game, this time coming off a deep solo home run in the top of the eighth to make it a 3-3 game.
UIW answered in the bottom half when Newberry doubled to lead off. With one down and Tabor at the plate, he drove in Newberry for his second RBI of the day to put the Cardinals back in front with his RBI single to make it 4-3.
Headed into the top of the ninth up by one, UIW went to closer
Fawster Voytko. The Islanders tallied three straight singles and then an RBI groundout to tie the game at four. A&M-Corpus Christi then pushed two more runs across on a double and a single to take a 6-4 lead.
With the Cardinals down to their final three outs,
Kevin Ramos singled to open the bottom half of the ninth. Unfortunately, he was stranded at first as the Islanders set down the next three hitters to secure the win.
Starting pitcher
Gus McKay allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits over five and a third innings while striking out two. Reliever Voytko took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season. He allowed three runs on five hits in an inning.
Newberry finished the game going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a home run, a double, and a pair of RBIs. His teammate Tabor also tallied two hits and two RBIs.
Anderson,
Christian Enriquez, Weaver,
Justin Rumfield,
Trent Rucker, and Ramos all tallied a hit.
