Cardinals Fall in Final Game of the Weekend

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word dropped the final game of the weekend 11-4 to conference foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals are now 18-23 and 8-16 in the Southland Conference, while the Islanders improved to 21-22 and 10-14 on the season.

The Islanders grabbed the early lead in the top of the second when they hit back-to-back home runs to go up 3-0.

UIW in the bottom of the third with two down, cut the lead to two when Preston Newberry hit his 10th home run of the season to make it 3-1 before the frame ended.

The Cardinals added another run in the bottom of the fourth, which started when Cole Tabor doubled down the right-field line. He later scored on Christian Enriquez's RBI double to right center, cutting the lead to 3-2.

The UIW pitching posted four straight scoreless innings, headed to the bottom of the sixth.  With one down, Enriquez singled to right field. On a 0-1 count, Colin Cymbalista connected for a two-run shot to deep left field to put the Cardinals up 4-3 for the first time today. The home run was his eighth of the season.

The Islanders tied the game in the seventh.  Then Texas A&M-Corpus Christi added three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to take an 11-4 lead.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held the Cardinals to a double in the seventh before recording nine straight outs to secure the win and the series sweep.

Starting pitcher Ashton Perkins allowed three runs on two hits over two innings, while striking out a game-high three. Relievers Jose Bludau and Tanner Crispin threw four scoreless innings combined while only giving up a pair of hits and a walk.

Reliever Fawster Voytko took the loss to fall to 2-4. He allowed four runs on four hits in an inning and a third.

The Cardinals tallied six extra base hits, with four of them being doubles and two being home runs. The two home runs put UIW at 61 on the season.

Tabor and Enriquez each went 2-for-4 on the day. Both recorded a double and a run scored, while Enriquez registered an RBI.

Cymbalista finished the day going 1-for-3 with a run scored, two RBIs, and a home run.

Newberry registered a home run, a run scored, and an RBI to close out the weekend.

UIW is on the road on Tuesday, April 28, when it faces its crosstown rival UTSA at 6 p.m. The Cardinals took the first meeting in walk-off fashion back on March 31 at home.
