SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word dropped its final non-conference game of the season 22-10 in a run-rule loss on the road to its crosstown rival, the University of Texas-San Antonio, tonight. The Cardinals drop to 18-24 on the season, while the Roadrunners improve to 30-14.
With one down in the top of the first,
Cole Tabor connected for a home run to put UIW up 1-0. It was his 12
th of the season.
Drake Anderson then singled to shortstop and later advanced to third on an error by the second baseman.
Christian Enriquez reached first on a fielder's choice and took second off the error.
Colin Cymbalista put the Cardinals up 4-0 when he cleared the bases with a three-run home run. Still with one down,
Jake Weaver touched them all with a solo home run of his own to make it 5-0 before the inning ended.
UTSA got two of the five runs back on a pair of hits in the bottom half of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Cardinals in the top of the second responded, and it started when
Preston Newberry walked and then scored on Tabor's second home run of the game to make it 7-2. Anderson followed that up with a single to right center and then moved to second on Enriquez's double. Anderson later touched home off of Cymbalista's sacrifice fly to right to push the lead to 8-2.
The Roadrunners cut the lead to two when they plated four runs on six hits in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 8-6.
UIW in the top of the fifth added a pair of runs to go up 10-6 before the inning ended.
UTSA, after that, broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth when it pushed 14 runs across on nine hits and then added two more runs in the sixth to take a 22-10 lead.
The Roadrunners' bullpen in the last two innings allowed just one baserunner to reach as they picked up the win to even the season series at 1-1.
UIW tallied three doubles and four home runs on the night.
Tabor finished the night going 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs, and two runs scored, while Cymbalista was 1-for-3 with four RBIs, a run scored, and a home run.
Anderson led the team in hits with three as he was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Enriquez, Newberry, and
Kevin Ramos all tallied doubles while Weaver had the team's fourth home run of the night.
UIW is back on the road this weekend for its final Southland Conference road series when it travels to the University of Texas Rio Grande. Game one of the series is on Friday at 6:30 and can be seen on ESPN+.
