Softball Takes Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT WORTH, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word closed out the Cowtown Tournament with easy victories over University of Arts and Sciences and Northwood University on Saturday.  The Cardinals defeated the Drovers, 13-3 and the Knights, 8-1.

In the first game of the day, the Cardinals (6-1) scored six times before making an out.  The rally was highlighted by a two-run homer by Brooke DuBois (Pearland/Pearland HS).  They would take an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning after a two-run double by Alex Alonzo (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS).

The Drovers scored a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fourth to make the game, 8-3 Cardinals.

In the sixth inning, the Cardinals for five more runs.  DuBois drove in two more runs with a double.  Courtney McCoy and Lindsey Hood each followed up with run-scoring doubles.

The Cardinals finished the game with 13 hits, including six extra-base hits.  Alonzo went 2-for-4 with four RBI's and two doubles while DuBois was 3-for-4 with four RBI's, two runs, a double and a homer.  Christy Trevino went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI's and two stolen bases.  Kristin Hebert (Humble/Atascocita HS) picked up the win in the circle.  She pitched 4.1 innings to improve to 2-1 on the season.  Mikaela Flores (Lockhart/Lockhart HS) pitched 1.2 shutout innings of relief to close out the game.

The Cardinals picked up their second win of the day against Northwood.  Flores pitched the final 3.2 innings of the game to earn her third win of the season.  She allowed a hit and two walks while striking out four.

The Cardinals once again jumped out to an early lead.  They scored twice in the first inning thanks to three errors by the Knights.  UIW took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Trevino doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a double steal.

The Cardinals took over the game in the fifth inning when they scored four times.  Trevino scored for the second time in the game on a double steal giving her a total of four stolen bases in the game.

The Cardinals racked up 14 hits in the game, including four doubles.  They stole a school-record nine bases in the game and Trevino tied the school record with her performance.  Taylor Johnson (Schertz/Clemens HS) went 4-for-5 at the plate while Alonzo, Lindsey Hood (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) and Kaitlyn Thomas (Denton/Denton Guyer HS) each had two hits apiece.

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday at UT-Permian Basin for a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m.
