SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Visiting Our Lady of the Lake University went 10-of-14 from three-point range in the second half as they came back to defeat the University of the Incarnate Word, 104-92 on Monday night in women's basketball action at the McDermott Center.
The game featured eight lead changes and three ties throughout the contest. The Cardinals (3-6) led 73-65 with 9:59 remaining in the game after a pair of free throws by
Alyssa Ward (Palmetto, FL/Palmetto HS). The Saints (8-2) would score 39 points over the remainder of the game with 18 coming on three-pointers.
The Saints took the lead with 5:31 remaining on a free throw by Sonji Green and they would not relinquish the lead. Mercedes Dodson hit a pair of back-breaking three-pointers on back-to-back possessions for OLLU. The second came with 3:21 to play and gave the visitors an 89-83 lead. The Cardinals never got closer than five points the rest of the game as the Saints went 8-for-8 at the foul line in the final 1:05.
In the first half it was the Saints that jumped out to the early lead thanks to their pressure defense. They led 9-2 after 1:47 and still led 25-18 midway through the half. The Cardinals began to assert themselves behind the play of
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) who was able to break the press continually. A 14-0 run gave UIW their own seven-point lead and they extended it to 44-32 with 2:49 left in the half on a jumper by
Haley Frias (Georgetown/Georgetown HS). The Saints were able to close the half on a 9-0 run to make it 46-41 at halftime.
The Cardinals shot 47.4 percent from the field, made 6-of-18 from three-point range and were 12-of-16 at the foul line. Frias and Adams each scored 23 points in the game. Frias knocked down five three-pointers and had four assists. Adams added six rebounds and three assists.
Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) had 22 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. It was her season high in points and third straight game with at least 10 rebounds. UIW had 17 more rebounds than OLLU, but committed eight more turnovers.
The Saints shot 46.6 percent from the field while draining 13-of-29 from three-point range. They also converted 23-of-28 at the charity stripe. Courtney Bayliss made 8-of-13 from three-point range, grabbed seven rebounds and led all players with 26 points. Taylor Hamilton added 22 points, 10 assists and four steals. Four other players scored in double figures.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at UT-Pan American with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
