EDINBURG, TEXAS – Texas-Pan American held off visiting University of the Incarnate Word, 65-61 on Thursday night in women's basketball action at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs (7-6) never trailed in the second half, but the Cardinals (3-7) made things interesting late in the game. In the final minute of the game, the Cardinals pulled to within one possession on three separate occasions. In each instance, the Broncs had the answer.
The game started out looking like the Broncs were going to blow out the Cardinals. They jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first 4:19 of the game before the Cardinals started rolling. Over the next 8:30, the Cardinals outscored UTPA, 23-7 to take a five-point lead. The Broncs would close the half on an 8-1 run to take a 28-26 lead into halftime.
The Cardinals shot 36.1 percent from the field, made 4-of-7 three-point attempts and were 13-of-20 at the foul line.
Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) and
Haley Frias (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) led the team with 11 points apiece. Maosa added seven rebounds and four assists while Frias knocked down all three of her three-point attempts. The Cardinals had six more rebounds than the Broncs, but committed four more turnovers.
The Broncs shot 34.4 percent from the field, made 4-of-20 from three-point range and were 17-of-24 at the charity stripe. Shawnte' Goff led all players with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor. Brittany Bush had 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks while T'Ondria Nolen added 10 points and five assists.
The Cardinals are off until December 30 when they host Grand Canyon University at the McDermott Center at 6 p.m.
