NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team closed out their season on Sunday afternoon at Stephen F. Austin with a 1-0 loss in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks (15-2-1, 11-0-0) entered the match undefeated in conference play and they quickly grabbed the lead on a Chelsea Raymond goal in the 13th minute. Raymond dribbled down the right side and then beat a defender 1-on-1 and drove her shot into the back of the net.
The goal by Raymond came after UIW goalkeeper Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) made the play of the game for the Cardinals (2-13-3, 2-6-3). SFA earned a penalty kick less than a minute before their goal, but Kowalik made a save on Rachel Owens' chance. It was the third save of the game for Kowalik and she would finish the match with three stops.
The Ladyjacks came out firing on offense with six shot attempts in the first 20 minutes, but then the Cardinals defense made some adjustments and slowed them down the rest of the game. SFA attempted 11 shots in the first half, but four of their final five were blocked by UIW players.
The Cardinals had a couple of scoring opportunities in the second half. Amanda Watkins (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) had an early chance in the half, but Morgan Glick made the save. Late in the game, Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) had a shot that was saved by Lillie Ehlert and led to a corner kick for the Cardinals, but no goal.
Glick and Ehlert combined on the shutout for Stephen F. Austin as they each made one save. Kowalik finished the year for the Cardinals playing 1005 minutes in goal and she posted a 1.34 goals against average.
