HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team hit the road on Monday in the hopes of picking up their first win of the season at University of Houston with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cardinals (0-1) lost their season opener on Friday to Texas Wesleyan, 74-66. Point guard
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) led the team with 24 points in the opener while
Melina Merritt (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge HS) added 14 points in her first collegiate game.
Samantha Swarts (Liberty Hill/Faith Academy) and
Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) each had eight rebounds. The team shot 33.9 percent in the opener and committed 21 turnovers.
The Cougars (1-0) won a low-scoring affair in their season opener at North Texas, 46-42. Tyler Gilbert came off the bench to provide a spark for the team scoring 10 points, grabbing nine rebounds and blocking three shots. Alecia Smith also has 10 points in the opener along with four steals. They shot 37.0 percent from the field and committed 30 turnovers, but limited UNT to 27.1 percent shooting.
