SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word hosts Southland Conference rival Houston Baptist University in football on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
UIW Game NotesLive StatsLive VideoThe Cardinals (0-5, 0-2) have lost their first two conference games of the season, but hope to change the narrative against the Huskies (1-3, 0-1). Each team is in their first official season playing a full Southland schedule. Last year the teams met in non-conference play with UIW winning, 24-3.
The UIW offense is averaging 194.4 yards per game with 61.0 coming on the ground.
Joseph Sadler (Devine/Devine HS) leads the rushing attack with 103 yards on 4.7 yards per carry for the season. The team is still looking for its first game with over 100 yards rushing on the season. Red-shirt freshman Breylann McCollom (Cibolo/Steele HS) is making the third start of his career at quarterback. He is 28-of-62 for 246 yards and four interceptions.
Casey Jennings (Fremont, CA/Washington HS) is the top receiver with 21 catches for 234 yards. He needs just 28 yards to become the third player in school history with 1,000 career receiving yards.
The Cardinals defense is led by linebacker
Padyn Giebler (Ivan/Stephenville HS) who has 34 tackles. Freshman
George Schwanenberg (Bulverde/Smithson Valley HS) is averaging 7.5 tackles per game and has twice made double digit tackles in a game.
Corey Lee (Humble/LaPorte HS) leads the team with 7.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.
UIW freshman kicker
Ramon Coto, Jr. (Houston/Westfield HS) is having a strong year. He is averaging 41.2 yards per punt and last week had four punts of at least 50 yards, including a school and stadium record punt of 73 yards. He has also sent 5-of-9 kickoffs for touchbacks.
The Huskies are in their first full season playing football after playing an abbreviated schedule in 2013. They are averaging 30.8 points per game and 341.8 yards per game on offense.
The offense is a little run heavy with 55.6 percent of plays being on the ground. B.J. Kelly leads the team with 234 yards on 4.8 yards per carry. Larry Day has rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Jonathan Fleming has been the main quarterback completing 58.2 percent of his passes for 594 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Three players have double-digit receptions with Kenneth Bibbins leading the team with 15 receptions for 204 yards and three scores.
Garrett Dolan leads the defense with over 10 tackles per game plus 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Josh Jones has 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Overall, the team has 13 sacks on the season.
