SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's swimming and diving team defeated visiting Southwestern University on Saturday at the Barshop Natatorium, 161-114. (

The UIW men won nine events in a meet that the team trained through. Many individuals swam in different events than their normal specialties.
The Cardinals won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:34.59 to start the meet on the right foot. Senior
Daniel Torres (Chihuahua, Mexico/COBACH 3) was the lone UIW swimmer to win more than one event on the day. He touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.10. He followed that up by winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:08.19.
Torres led a strong contingent in the backstroke. Freshmen
David Moore (San Antonio/Marshall HS) and Kaulin Applin (Houston/MacArthur HS) backed him up by taking second and third in the race.
Following a win by
Oleksii Chokh (Kovel, Ukraine/Psysical Republical Culture HS) 100-yard breaststroke, the Cardinals swept the 100-yard butterfly.
Mehdi El Hazzaz (Casablanca, Morocco/Al Jabr HS) won in a time of 52.36 and was followed by
Alex Flores (Mission/Sharyland HS) and
Aaron Norton (Tyler/Grace Community HS).
Alex Brouwer (Scottsdale, AZ/Notre Dame Prep) and
Robbie Morris (Helotes/O'Connor HS) each picked up solid victories. Brouwer won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.02 while Morris took the 500-yard freestyle in 4:50.44.
The final bit of dominance for the Cardinals came in the 400-yard individual medley where they took first, second and third. Connor Hennessy (San Antonio/Business Careers HS) hit the wall first in 4:10.94 and was followed by Applin and Brouwer.
The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday at home when they host University of Houston in a dual meet.
