SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word football team will be looking for a measure of revenge this week against opponent Eastern New Mexico. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. at Benson Stadium and it part of UIW Hall of Fame Weekend.
The Cardinals (2-2) lost the Greyhounds (1-1) last year at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX, 34-24. UIW was driving for a potential game winning touchdown in the final minutes of the contest when an interception return for a touchdown by ENMU's Jayson Serda sealed the game for the Greyhounds.
The Cardinals have yet to allow a point at home this year, but will have their work cut out for them with the high-powered Eastern New Mexico attack. The Greyhounds are averaging 41.5 points and 446.0 yards per game. They have a ground game and are averaging 255.0 rushing yards per contest. Jordan Wells leads the team with 172 rushing yards and is averaging 10.8 yards per carry while Andrew Lopez has been the workhorse with 29 carries for 169 yards and four touchdowns.
UIW counters the strong ENMU offense with a defense that is allowing just 309.8 yards per game with 101.5 coming on the ground. The Cardinals have limited the opposition to negative rushing yards at home this year. Senior defensive tackle
Robby Horton (Beeville/Jones HS) has been the top player on the UIW defense with 16 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.
The UIW offense is led by red-shirt freshman quarterback
Trent Brittain (Eastland/Eastland HS). He is completing 58.3 percent of his passes on the season for 194.5 yards per game. He has tossed six touchdown passes against only one interception and he leads the team with 182 rushing yards. His favorite target has been
Casey Jennings (Fremont, CA/Washington HS) who has 20 receptions for 296 yards and two touchdowns.
The Greyhounds have allowed 27.5 points per game and 389.0 yards per game on the season. They are spearheaded by Christopher Barnard who leads the team with 19 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.
The UIW special teams is highlighted by punter
Emmanuel Nunez (Dallas/Seguin HS). He is averaging 41.5 yards per punt and has four punts end up inside the 20-yard line.
At halftime of the game, UIW will honor Tom Benson and Matt Seale as the 19
th and 20
th members of the UIW Athletic Hall of Fame. Benson is a longtime supporter of Incarnate Word and education as a whole. The New Orleans Saints owner and his wife, Gayle, were among the moving influences to initiate a football program at Incarnate Word. Seale is a former walk-on baseball player who finished his career in 2006 and still holds eight school records.
