Five Straight for Cardinals

Box Score LAKELAND, FLORIDA – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team ran their season opening win streak to five games in a row on Friday night.  The Cardinals (5-0) knocked off Florida Southern College on the road, 3-1.

UIW trailed in a game for the first time this year when the Moccasins (0-3) scored in the 21st minute.  The Cardinals defense stopped a cross into the box, but it came free and Kristy Legoas headed it home at the left post.

The Cardinals had to wait 10 minutes before they were even able to attempt a shot, but they made it count.  Sarah Johnson (Austin/Home School) took a pass from Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) on the right wing and fired a shot that tied the game at 1-1 at the 30:14 mark. Five minutes later the Cardinals took the lead.

The Moccasins were whistled for a foul near the top of the box.  Kathryn Mundy (Houston/Pope John XXIII) stepped up for the free kick and put the ball into the top of the net from 20 yards out for her second game-winning goal in as many games.

The score remained 2-1 for quite some time although the Mocs threatened to score on numerous occasions.  Legoas nearly tied the match 20 minutes into the second half, but her shot was saved off the goal line by the UIW defense.

The Mocs continued to pepper the goal, but it was the Cardinals who broke through.  Freshman Alexis Santos (Mesquite/North Mesquite HS) set up Miller for a scoring opportunity and she buried a shot from the top of the box that clipped the cross bar to give the Cardinals a 3-1 advantage at 77:10.

The Cardinals did not falter over the final 13 minutes and held on for the 3-1 victory.  UIW had 11 shots and the Mocs only had 10, but eight of them came in the second half.  FSC also earned seven corner kicks while the Cardinals had two.  Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) improved to 5-0 in goal for UIW and made two saves.  Erin Moseley took the loss for the Mocs, but did make three saves.

The Cardinals put their winning streak on the line on Sunday at 11 a.m. when they travel to Rollins College.
